Recognizing Excellence in Bird Dog Field Trials Since 1963

The Purina Points Award Program, sponsored by Purina Pro Plan, is one of the most respected recognition systems in American bird dog field trials. Established in 1963, it honors dogs, handlers, and owners based on consistent performance in elite, approved horseback competition nationwide.

The ABHA Connection

The American Bird Hunting Association (ABHA) proudly supports the traditions and standards of the Purina Points Program. Many ABHA-supported and affiliated field trials meet the competitive and ethical requirements to qualify as Purina Points events.

How the Program Works

Dogs earn Purina Points by placing in approved Purina Points field trials. Points are calculated based on placement, number of dogs entered, stake format, and championship designation.

 

The Purina Points season runs May 1 – April 30.

Key Requirements

Dogs must be DNA certified

Participants must be in good standing with UKC / FDSB

Amateur awards are restricted to owner-handled dogs

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Winners may receive Purina product awards, cash prizes, banners, oil paintings, and recognition at the annual Purina Awards Banquet.

WHAT ARE PURINA POINTS?

Points earned by dogs and handlers placing in approved field trials, used to determine annual award winners.

DO ALL TRIALS AWARD PURINA POINTS?

No. Only trials approved by the Awards Committee.

ARE MINIMUM ENTRIES REQUIRED?

Yes. Most stakes require at least 16 dogs.

IS DNA CERTIFICATION REQUIRED?

Yes. All dogs earning Purina Points must be DNA certified.

OPEN VS. AMATEUR AWARDS?

Open awards may include professional handlers. Amateur awards are owner-handled only.

WHO OVERSEES THE PROGRAM?

The Awards Committee administers and enforces all standards.
