THE FIELD TRIAL DOG
The Athletes of the Upland World
Pointing dog field trials celebrate the incredible natural instincts and athletic ability of the pointing breeds. These dogs are trained and conditioned to run with power, intensity, style, and intelligence — working boldly to the front while locating game birds with exceptional scenting ability. They are the heart and drive of the sporting tradition we carry forward.
What is a Pointing Dog Field Trial?
A pointing dog field trial is a competitive event designed to test a dog’s real-world hunting performance. A superior performance is forward, fast, and purposeful — a breathtaking expression of instinct and athletic excellence.

Dogs run in pairs over expansive grounds, with judges evaluating their:
Range & application of the terrain
Speed, drive, and endurance
Scenting and bird-finding ability
Intensity and style on point
Steadiness and manners around birds
Connection with their handler
Prime Years of Performance
6-12 MONTHS
Field trial dogs begin training early, often starting formal development between 6–12 months.
AGES 3 - 7
Their peak competitive years typically span 3 to 7 years old — when speed, stamina, mental maturity, and confidence come together.
AGE 7+
Many dogs remain competitive beyond that range with proper care, conditioning, and a passion for the game.
